Two stories of Soviet men living in different periods of Soviet and Post-Soviet Russia. They are both disabled veterans who lost their legs in combat. One of them returned home to his village in 1949 after World War II and the other came back from the War in Ukraine in 2023.

Both of these men were formed by regime of the Soviet Union. Both of them are products of Soviet ideology. Both need to reevaluate their lives following their realization of the truth looming behind the propaganda with which the Soviet government has been deceiving them for years.

By recounting the life stories of these two disabled men, set against two pivotal moments in Russian history, the feature film «SOVIETLAND» juxtaposes contrasting stages of Soviet society's evolution-from the mid-twentieth century to the globalized, post-industrial present.

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

Exploring these two narratives spanning different periods of Soviet and post-Soviet history offers us an opportunity to delve into a pressing question: Why did Russians allow the war in Ukraine to unfold, despite the prosperity and peace that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union? Why have they done so little to prevent it?
